Aitnemed is an association run by ski instructors and volcano guides, all qualified to run activities such as: leading tour groups especially in volcanic areas in Italian and foreign territory. Aitnemed’s origins are in Catania province which has obviously focused its attention on the MT Etna area nearby. The climb up Etna, even along the easiest route is unique besides being symbolic for any journeys to Sicily. The great volcano represents more than a simple mountain, its ascent to the top crosses extraordinarily beautiful landscapes, like lava flows of recent and less recent times with a thousand morphologies called Sciare (cooled lava), long volcanic sand descents , lava arches and volcanic cones whose summits open for lava flows.
Even more unique are the cave visits. The cave visits are formed by lava flowing that when its surface has cooled continue to flow from the inside often on several layers. In one of these caves, Grotta del Gelo (Ice Cave), there is the only perennial ice to be found in all southern Italy.
Our activities vary from highly educational short excursions on easy trails to full-day excursions on more technical physically demanding routes. For more demanding hikers, we organize two-day or longer trips sleeping in bivovacs . The Etna excursions can be done all year round, on foot, on skis or on mountain bikes, along snowy trails and remote slopes exploring the various features that our mountain has to offer.
There are excursions available all year long between the mountain and the sea to discover more interesting wildernesses. Among our routes, there is the Grotta del Gelo (Ice Cave). Inside it you can find a small glacier plus the two-day long hike along the Mt Etna altamontana track which takes you across barren lava rock areas and dense birch and beech woods that can be found on Etna up to a height of 2000m a.s.l. Mountain refuges are set perfectly in harmony with the area and are the starting point for our excursions. Naturally during your visit to Etna, you won’t miss out on visits to the richly historic towns in the area.
