BOOK NOW – PAY ON ARRIVAL
This trek will allow us to explore the wild northern slope of the volcano, far from the crowds of mass tourism. Along the trails, we will uncover the diverse geological features of Mount Etna, including massive lateral craters, lava flows with countless morphologies, and fascinating lava flow caves. In the final stretch, we will immerse ourselves in the rich and varied world of Etna’s endemic plant species.
Ascent to 2800 meter
From Piano Provenzana, we will take 4×4 vehicles up to an altitude of 2800 meters. Here, we will enjoy a breathtaking 360° view of Etna’s summit area. On one side, we will see the summit craters (and, if we are lucky, volcanic activity), while on the other side, we can admire the vast volcanic depression of the Valle del Bove.
Piano delle Concazze
After a short walk through the lunar landscape of Piano delle Concazze, we will enjoy views of the lower areas of the volcano, including the Gulf of Taormina, Calabria, and the Aeolian Islands. We will then return to the 4×4 vehicles to descend to 2500 meters, where the longer trekking portion begins.
Northeast Rift Trekking
From this point, we will hike along the Northeast Rift, passing through enormous lateral craters. Along the way, we will visit the hornitos (small volcanic formations) from the 1947 eruption and the eruptive fissures (bottoniera) from the 2002 eruption.
Return through Beech Forests
The trek concludes with a journey through stunning beech forests and past the evocative petrified trees from the 2002 eruption, eventually leading us back to Piano Provenzana.
